Polestar 2 vs Volvo XC40: Interior Comparison for Owners

Two very different cars from the same DNA

The Polestar 2 and the Volvo XC40 Recharge are built on the same platform — Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). They share motors, battery architecture, and a significant amount of interior components. Yet they feel like completely different cars to drive and sit in.

If you own one and are considering the other, or if you’re curious why an accessory designed for the Polestar 2 also fits the XC40, this breakdown covers exactly what’s shared, what’s different, and what it means for daily driving.

What they share

The platform commonality between the two cars is substantial. Both use the same CMA architecture, which means the floor, firewall, and general body structure are closely related. Wheelbase, interior width, and many mounting points are nearly identical.

Specific interior components that are shared or near-identical include the sun visor assembly, HVAC controls and vents, door panel structure, headliner attachment points, and several trim pieces. This is exactly why ShadeSlide™ — designed for the Polestar 2’s OEM visor — also fits the Volvo XC40 with only a vehicle-specific variant needed.

The shared platform also means that many aftermarket accessories, protective films, and interior upgrades designed for one vehicle are compatible with the other.

Where they diverge

Design philosophy

The Polestar 2 leans hard into minimalism — dark trims, matte surfaces, and a deliberate absence of ornamentation. The XC40 has the same structural foundation but wears it differently: more color options, warmer material choices, and a cabin that reads as premium-approachable rather than premium-austere.

Body style

The Polestar 2 is a fastback sedan. The XC40 is a compact SUV with a taller roofline, higher seating position, and a more traditional upright driving posture. This affects sightlines significantly — which, combined with the shared sun visor limitation, means the visor gap problem manifests slightly differently in each car.

Interior color options

The Polestar 2 is available almost exclusively in dark interior colorways. The XC40 offers significantly more variety, including a Blonde (tan/beige) interior option. This is why ShadeSlide™ for the XC40 includes a Blonde finish that the Polestar 2 version doesn’t offer.

Technology and software

Both cars run the same Android Automotive OS infotainment system. The software experience is essentially identical between the two vehicles.

The one thing they share that neither manufacturer has fixed

Both the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 use the same fixed-panel sun visor design with no sliding extender. Both have the same B-pillar gap that lets in low-angle side-window glare. And both have owner communities with long-running forum threads asking why this hasn’t been addressed.

ShadeSlide™ was designed to solve exactly this problem — for both vehicles. The Polestar 2 version fits model years 2021–2025. The Volvo XC40 version fits 2019–2025, including the XC40 Recharge.

Which car is right for you?

If you prioritize driving dynamics, a low center of gravity, and a focused aesthetic, the Polestar 2 is the stronger choice. If you prioritize versatility, cargo space, a higher seating position, and a warmer interior feel, the XC40 has the edge. Both are excellent EVs. Both have the same sun visor problem.
